These tests target unique specific genetic sequence of a gene by applying Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) technology. MDU offers diagnostic tests for HIV-1, SARS-CoV-2 and sexual transmitted infections (STI). This department recently implemented new tests for targeted HIV-1 drug resistance and SARS-CoV-2 whole genome sequencing. Dr. Andreas Shiningavamwe, heads this department.
HIV-1 Early Infant Diagnostics (EID) test as also known as Nucleic Acid Testing (NAT) is used to detect HIV infection in the newborn babies born by HIV-exposed mothers. HIV-1 Viral load testing is used to monitor patients who are on Antiretroviral Therapy (ART), to determine viral load progression.
Moreover, the MDU has PCR technology that detects sexually transmitted infections (STIs) such as Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Chlamydia trachomatis and Human Papilloma Virus (HPV). The presence of HPV virus can lead to the development of genital warts, abnormal cervical cells, and ultimately cervical cancer.
